~ Soldierstown Graveyard Rules ~

The following rules have been effective from Monday 21st February 2005.

1. Owing to the short supply of new ground, sale of burial rights of new plots within the graveyard will be restricted to persons who have been recorded financial contributors for the past three consecutive years and have been in regular attendance at church worship. Where doubt should arise, particularly in circumstances of long-term illness, the ruling of the rector and churchwardens shall be final.

2. No family will be allocated more than two plots, unless in exceptional circumstances. The purchaser of the plots shall receive a "Burial Card" stating his or her name, address, contact number and the amount of money paid with the register number of the plots and number of plots purchased. The right of burial passes with the possession of the burial card. No new grave plot shall be allocated and registered until the necessity arises.

3. Registration cannot be transferred but an application for transfer may be arranged at the discretion of the Rector and churchwardens. This must be completed before any such plots can be re-opened for interments. The fee for transferring a registration will be £50.00. A transferee will be bound by the conditions in paragraph 1 above.

4. Requests for the opening of graves shall be made to the graveyard registrar or the Rector. All requests require presentation of the correct burial card. A member of the family or the person with the burial card must meet the graveyard registrar in the graveyard to identify and confirm the existing registered grave. While the church will endeavour to help in any way possible, it cannot ultimately be legally responsible. The responsibility for ensuring burial in the correct plot or grave rests solely with the family. The time of burial must not be arranged without the prior permission of the Rector and churchwardens. Reasonable notice must be given and the graveyard registrar is to be notified of the name of the undertaker.

5. Under public health and safety legislation no coffin shall be buried in any grave nearer to the surface than 1 metre measuring from the uppermost part of the coffin. After cremation ashes must not be scattered, but instead they are to be buried in a biodegradable container / casket.

6. Persons desiring to erect headstones and surrounds etc in the graveyard must submit plans and have prior approval from the Rector and churchwardens. The maintenance of these memorials will be the legal and financial responsibility of the families concerned. The graveyard registrar may consult the Rector and churchwardens about materials from graves that he considerers to be offensive, unsightly or to detract in any way from the sympathetic environment of the graveyard.

7. No plants or shrubs are to be planted. Withered flowers and such like items must be deposited in the bins. With the exception of guide dogs no pets are permitted in the graveyard.

8. Please remember that the Church is under no obligation to provide burial plots. Even if we are able to acquire more ground the opportunity to purchase a plot in the future may not be assumed, especially where a family is neither worshipping regularly nor contributing financially.
